Spacey’s directorial debut presents an excellent cast and gets off to a promising start, however it sputters to a dramatic stop midway through. Cinderella Man: Recounts the true story of James J. Braddock, the Cinderella Man. Braddock was a boxer in the early’30’s that was seemingly already washed up from a not so stellar career. He was down on his luck and barely keeping the family alive. To save his family Braddock revives his career, and then does the impossible. He wins the heavyweight title.
Chisum: This film, based on actual events, is about the attempts of good ranchers like Wayne and Knowles to stop the takeover of Lincoln County, New Mexico, by the corrupt Tucker. One of few Wayne Westerns based on historical occurrences. Cast includes John Wayne, Geoffrey Deuel, Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Patric Knowles, Lynda Night, and Richard Jaeckel. Addicted to Love: This movie is a dark comedy which where we see an ex-boyfriend, and an ex-girlfriend spying on their former partners. They find themselves teamed together, with the young lady planning acts of revenge for her former man. Meg Ryan, Matthew Broderick, Kelly Preston, and Tcheky Karyo star. (1997 dark comedy directed by Griffin Dunne)
Scrooged: A humorous take on the famous Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol. Set in modern times, Frank Cross runs a TV station, and doesn’t really appreciate the Christmas spirit. The three ghost of Christmas past, present and future join forces to set Frank straight.
Shadow Magic: In what might be hailed Chinese Paradise, the earliest days of China’s film industry are depicted in this tale of a travelling Englishman. His show named “shadow voodoo” marvels and clashes all around as it turns the camcorder’s eye on individuals who see themselves and their nation in a totally new way. Admirable view of early-20th-century China and the lifestyle bridging consequence only films appear to accomplish. Cast includes Jared Harris, Xia Yu, Xing Yufei, Liu Peiqi, and Lu Liping. (115 minutes, 2000)
Frontier Marshal: Vibrant retelling of occurrences leading to legendary gunfight at the OK Corral. Scott is perfect as Tombstone’s new marshal, Wyatt Earp. Romero is more moody than cold-blooded as Dr. Halliday, and Kelly is the gal from his past who reminds the Dr. of his earlier, saner days as an obstetrician. Cast includes Randolph Scott, Nancy Kelly, Cesar Romero, Binnie Barnes, John Carradine, and Eddie Foy. (71 minutes,’39)
The Interpreter: U.N. translator Silvia Broome overhears a death threat made against an African leader. She knows that she was seen and fears for her life. Upon reporting the event to law enforcement, she finds that help will not come easy.
