Incredibly well performed and prompted research of I’ amour and the banality of sin. Bundles a wallop, and holds no punches in its brutal portrayal of the couple’s vicious descent into madness. Genealogies of a Crime: Deneuve is beaming in a twin role as the attorney for, and victim of, a strange youthful gentleman who’s implicated of killing his psychiatrist mother’s sibling after she supposedly subjected him to drastic mind-control therapy. Well-performed although conceited, deliberately perplexing blend of puzzle, satire, and surrealism; hoaxed up with pointless flashbacks within flashbacks and other narrative and graphic gimmicks. Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli, Melvil Poupaud, Andrzej Seweryn, and Bernadette LaFont. (114 minutes,’97)
All at Sea: Strong comedy that keeps its own all the way through. Guinness is adorable as sailor who couldn’t bear the sight of water although purchases rundown home on a wharf, turning it into an entertainment palace. Original title was Barnacle Bill. Cast includes Alec Guinness, Irene Browne, Percy Herbert, and Harold Goodwin. (87 minutes,’57)
Trackdown: Montana rancher (Jim Mitchum) comes to L.A. looking for his sister, who has fallen into a seamy life in the streets. Not much depth however lots of action. Cast includes Jim Mitchum, Karen Larnm, Anne Archer, Erik Estrada, Cathy Lee Crosby, and Vince Cannon. (98 minutes,’76)
Passenger 57: Mastermind terrorist Charles Rane has hijacked flight 163. When they terrorist make their move, passenger 57, security expert John Cutter, is in the bathroom. When he comes out, he sees the situation, remains unseen, and plots to save the flight, and it’s passengers.
Jackie Chan’s Who Am I: Chan is part of a secret armed forces team sent on a lethal mission. He loses his memory, and can’t figure out why people are after him. This is an action film with very little else to it. Cast includes Jackie Chan, Michelle Ferre, Mirai Yarnarnoto, Ron Smerczak, Ed Nelson, and Tom Pompert. (108 minutes,’98)
The Born Losers: What appeared at the time just some other biker film attained new interest in the ’70s as the inception of Billy Jack; he helps free youthful dropout James from the grips of Slate’s gang. Excellent action scenes, although Laughlin’s use of brutality as an arraignment of bloodshed is already present. Cast includes Cast includes Tom Laughlin, Elizabeth James, Jeremy Slate, and William Wellman. (112 minutes,’67)
Black Legion: Plant employee Bogart, disheartened after losing a promotion to a colleague named “Dombrowski,” becomes engaged with a Ku Klux Klan type group. This commanding and still pertinent drama is well made. Cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Erin O’Brien-Moore, Dick Foran, Ann Sheridan, Joe Sauers (Sawyer), Helen Flint, Dickie Jones, and Henry Brandon. (83 minutes,’36)
Metropolis: A private investigator and his nephew track a suspect to the futuristic Metropolis, meet a bizarre gal who is really an extremely commanding android, and decipher a message sent by a rebel forces leader who plans to take over the city. This is an amazing Japanese animated movie. It is written by Katsuhiro Otomo Akira, based on a visual novel by Osamu Tezuka called Astro Boy. Rich backdrops balance with cartoon looking lead characters, although dramatic storytelling and commanding visuals defeat film’s shortcomings. Cast includes Kei Kobayashi, Kohki Okada, Taro Ishida, and Kousei Tomita. (106 minutes, 2001)
