Brighton – East Sussex is located on the South Coast of Great Britain in East Sussex. This area has been a popular tourist destination for years and in fact, became a health resort as early as the’ century. It was at this point that it became a single day destination for those looking to get relaxed and revitalized. In the’40s this area became more popular as a result of the railroad and experienced major population growth over the next hundred years.
In modern times this beach town attracts almost more visitors than any other beach town in England and Europe. The area is also popular for conventions and business meetings. There are also two universities in the city limits.
In the 1500’s this area was recorded in the Domesday Book. This book was a survey that was established to determine the limits of towns and communities for the purpose of taxation. The town was recorded at this time as the town of Bristlemestune. It was determined that this town should be taxed 4000 herring. In 1514 the French invaded the town and destroyed most of the structures that existed at the time. There are few remains from prior to this invasion. One structure that survived the invasion was the St Nicholas Church.
However this original town was destroyed in 1514 by the French during the war between England and France. Very little of this area actually survived one such structure was a St. Nicholas Church that partly managed to make it through the fires that was started by the French.
In the 1700. ’s this area witnessed a large influx of vacationers. This was as a result of a doctor who recommended to his patients that get seawater for their ailments. This created a health resort and was one of the first of its kind. From this influx of visitors major construction occurred including the fishing village.
In the 1780s Brighton became popular with King George IV. King George enjoyed it here so much that he had a royal palace erected here. This palace is the Royal Pavilion and can still be seen today. This palace consists of incredible architectural elements and is considered one of the most fascinating architectural achievements in the world. This structure with its onion domes and columns resembles an Indian palace more than a British residents. It is believed it was here that King George catered to his acquaintance the married Mrs. Fitzherbert.
The Royal Pavilion is one of Britain’s more popular tourist attractions and is symbolic of the affect this area has on those that visit it. There is still an alluring presence as it was during the life of King George. It is this alluring beauty that attracts over 8 million tourists a year. The beaches, of Brighton are a great place to visit.
