The aspiration of every Hollywood producer is to put out a motion picture that is a gigantic hit. The combination of a magnificent plot with brilliant actors and special effects seems to be the recipe for a blockbuster. Still, it does not always work and now and then even when a motion picture has all of the elements that hypothetically make a success, it still fails at the box office. There is no definite recipe for a Hollywood sensation.
Down to Earth – Homer Croy’s continuation to “They had to See Paris” has newly riche Midwesterner Rogers setting an end to his family’s mindless investing by affirming that he’s broke. Not one of Will Roger’s best film attempts. Cast includes Can Rogers, Irene Opulent, Dorothy Jordan, and Mary Carlisle. (73 minutes,’32)
The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s solitary try at comedy is less farcical than some of his more serious films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had true potential, and Mitchum nicely underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,’61)
My Son the Hero – Larger-than-life movie in regards to sinister Emperor Cadmus of Thebes, who challenges the lords and faces the fury of the Titans. Cast includes Pedro Armendariz, Jacqueline Sassard, Antonella Lualdi, and Giuliano Gemma. (122 minutes,’62)
The Seniors – 4 collegians open a counterfeit sex hospital, which mushrooms into a multi million dollar business. The movie is alternately stupid and sarcastic, with some harmless nudity thrown in. Cast includes Jeffrey Byron, Gary Imhof, Dennis Quaid, Lou Richards, PrisciIla Barnes, Alan Reed, Edward Andrews, Robert Emhardl, and Alan Hewitt. (87 minutes,’78)
Fantasies – Amateurish gibberish in regards to Derek’s and Hooten’s attempts to turn a Greek island into a tourist trap. Shot in’73, while Bo was sixteen. Cast includes Bo Derek, Peter Hooten, Anna Alexiadis, Phaedon Gheorghitis, and Therese Bohlin. (81 minutes,’81)
Lantana – Poignant, mature story of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
