There are several options available for wind resistant lighters. The most significant difference between each of the options is the fuel that the lighters employ. Today, many users have switched over to butane-filled lighters because of their cleaner performance and because they impart no chemical taste to any tobacco which they are used to light. Either option can provide excellent performance in adverse conditions including wind and rain. For those who love the outdoors, a windproof lighter is an excellent accessory.
A windproof torch uses butane as its fuel. These torches produce very hot, high-pressure jets of blue flame. Because sufficient force is used to power the flame, the fuel is not blown away by the wind. These devices are excellent for any outdoor application. The multi-jet models are particularly useful. The flames on these lighters can be directed, even upside down, which makes them ideal for difficult lighting situations. Deep candles, lanterns and, of course, pipes can be easily lit because of the directed flames.
A fluid-filled lighter offers windproof performance because the fuel is too viscous to be taken off of the wick by the action of the wind. These lighters do have one disadvantage in strong winds. The flame may be pushed over the side of the lighter by the wind and it may end up being very large because of the amount of oxygen being introduced into the flame. For that reason, these lighters should always be held away from one’s face when they are lit.
Windproof torches with multiple jets also tend to garner a few style points with those who see the lighter in action. The strong blue flames have the appearance of an actual torch which makes them quite a sight. Where lighting a cigar or a pipe is concerned, there are other advantages. Lighting either requires that the flame be held to the tobacco for a time. In windy conditions with a standard butane lighter, this will prove to be impossible in most cases. Even fluid-filled lighters cannot offer the same efficiency.
Either choice will provide good results. Either choice will also generally constitute a very well-made lighter. Refillable lighters in general are of a much higher quality than disposables. They are designed to provide years of service and to be refilled many times over. These devices are sometimes seen passed down from generation to generation. Even the butane-filled models can provide such a long service life. Some of these lighters are actually collector’s items.
