Vernon Young For those people who are not too knowledgeable on computer technology, data storage and servers may be nearly foreign terms. They are becoming lesser through the years though. Even kids in elementary school nowadays have encountered and understood these well enough to make it a part of their vocabulary. However, computer users need to know the basics of the two.
With the internet’s advent, both have highlighted many conversations among web surfers and even offline PC users. This truth only shows how important are both in the field of modern computer use, prompting encouragements for everyone to learn the fundamentals of servers and data storage. Without the slightest knowledge, one surely cannot make improvements in managing his data and network service.
If one does not know what a data storage and a server basically means, he will certainly find it hard to make a choice in buying a computer. He will only be confused at the strange technical verbiage he will encounter when talking at a salesman or when reading a brochure on the product he wishes to buy.
The meaning of data storage is easier to comprehend though. As its name implies, it is that part of the computer where information is kept. However, the data can easily be accessed for processing, copying, or deleting. Most PCs today have two built-in data storage mechanisms; one is directly accessible by the PC and the other needs another external medium.
Data storage can also be called as memory. However, this can lead to its being confused for processor registers and caches. Registers and caches store information for a short period or only for as long as the processor is using it.
Data storage capacity is measured in gigabytes. Before, when computers were novelties, it used to be in megabytes only. That was when the hardware for storage was made of drums with magnetic disks inside. Recent PCs have increasingly relied on microchips, which can handle larger volumes of data despite its size.
As its name implies, a server can be a computer or an electronic device that can provide a service. It is most commonly understood as the hardware that serves the network needs for a computer group. It may not also be computer but just a device that ensures a computer’s connection to an internet service provider.
Computer servers may be utilized as data storage. This provides network users to share and retrieve files from one computer only. The network that it covers is called a domain. For being at the center of the domain, the server computer may have control over the domain name system.
