The Face of Fu Manchu: The deaths in London continue, convincing Scotland Yards that the evil Fu Manchu is still alive in spite of people witnessing his execution. The film is set in an incredible’20s environment, with an excellent global cast. Cast includes Christopher Lee, Nigel Green, James Robertson Law, Howard Marion-Crawford, Tsai Chin, and Walter Rilla. Alfie Darling: A forgettable continuation to Alfie, with Cost a most insufficient substitute for Michael Caine. This time around our idol falls for a fashionable publication editor. Cast includes Alan Cost, Jill Townsend, Joan Collins, Annie Ross, Sheila White, and Rula Lenska. (102 minutes,’75)
Close Your Eyes: Scotland Yard investigator Henderson draws hypnotherapist Visnjic into a difficult case concerning a serial murderer and a little gal who’s been shocked from being held hostage by him. Mixing occult factors with a whodunit, this unique, sincerely scary thriller stays on target right to the end. Cast includes Goran Visnjic, Shirley Henderson, Miranda Otto, Paddy Considine, Claire Rushbrook, Fiona Shaw, Coon Redgrave, and Sophie Stuckey (103 minutes, 2003)
The Sensuous Nurse: Voluptuous Ursula is employed as a nurse and is actually helping the demise of a prosperous man with a heart problem by keeping his pulse speeding in this titillating, sex comedy. Ursula does look awesome in the nude, nonetheless. Cast includes Ursula Andress, Jack Palance, Duilio Del Prete, Luciana Paluzzi, Lino Toffolo, and Mario Pisu. (78 minutes,’76)
Each Dawn I Die: Journalist Cagney is framed, and sent to the penitentiary where he meets a tough inmate, Raft. There is excellent acting all around. Cagney hits a white-hot summit with his role, however last half of film becomes outrageously implausible. Music score by Max Steiner. Cast includes James Cagney, George Raft, George Bancroft, Jane Bryan, Maxie Rosenbloom, Stanley Ridges, Louis Jean Heydt, Abner Biiberrman, John Wray, Victor Jory, and Thurston Chamber. (92 minutes,’39)
Dragonfly: An ER doctor, mourning for his lifeless spouse, acquires a succession of signals from her containing messages from other people who’ve had near-death experiences. What do they mean’ More drawn out than it needs to be, although a captivating and abnormal tale of one guy’s metaphysical odyssey. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Kathy Bates, Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Linda Seek, Susanna Thompson, Jacob Vargas, Jay Thomas, and Matt Craven. (103 minutes, 2002)
A Nightmare on Elm Street the Dream Child: The fifth in the Freddy Crugar series with everyone with the exception of Englund just going through the paces. Here, scarred, dream haunting Freddy Krueger (Englund) uses the unborn child of Wilcox to strike at her buddies. As typical, visual effects are a highlight however don’t spare the film from being a bore. Cast includes Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Kelly Jo Minter, Erika Anderson, Whitby Hertford, and Danny Hassel. (89 minutes,’89)
The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. A lame redo of John Carpenter’s’80 film modifies the structure but does not improve on the first edition. Cast includes Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh, Adrian Hough, Sara Botsford, and Rade Sherbedgia. (100 minutes, 2005)
