Strict adherence to the principles mentioned below will help in dealing with a majority of these aspects. All of them play a significant role in the attractiveness of a space, though they may be put to use in different ways in different situations.
Unity: This entails the idea that the whole home or any other structure is to be treated as one unit, separated or divided only by walls and staircases, and that there should exist some amount of intrinsic consistency in the design of the unit as an overall entity. Balance: This means appropriately adjusting items in a given space. It is best to place things with the same visual characteristics at diverse points in order to strike a good balance. Balance can be of three types. The first is symmetrical, which is the most conventional, and the simplest to attain. The second is asymmetrical, which needs a lot of creativity, but is increasingly popular. The last is radial, which is achieved by taking a central point or item from which the other items seem to be relatively positioned.
Proportion: This is essentially to do with the size and proportions of the objects. It is critical that most items in a room be proportional to each other. The absence of proportion will make some pieces of furniture stand out, while certain others will be left overshadowed, which will not be good for the overall attractiveness of the room.
Focus: Having a focus in a room is a sign of excellent interior design. Focal articles can be anything ranging from a furniture item to a beautiful painting or some other art work. The item must be such that it is important in the overall design of the room and is able to grab the attention of the onlooker. While it should be unique, it must gel with its surroundings.
Rhythm: A well-designed room should have an element of rhythm as well. This implies that the design must give a feeling of continuity and smooth flow. Arches, ornate designs on walls and floors, carefully chosen paintings, repetition of shades and designs etc will help you attain a rhythm.
