Saints Humiliate Raiders In NFL Preseason Rout

While its unwise to put too much importance on NFL preseason performances, its hard not to be impressed with the New Orleans Saints offense. In particular, its impossible to not be impressed with the play of starting QB Drew Brees. Brees played only three series against the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night, but that was enough–by the time he left the Saints led 21-0 en route to a 45-7 thrashing on their hosts. New Orleans improved to 3-0 on the NFL preseason, while the Raiders dropped to 1-2.

All Brees did in only three series was roll up 179 yards on 14 of 17 passing and three touchdowns. After the game, he did a decent job sounding humble despite the overwhelming dominance of his play:

“I just felt like we accomplished what we wanted to there with regards to playing with our tempo and our intensity. We were able to get into a rhythm. When you walk away with three touchdowns on three possessions, that’s what you want to do.”

Brees was aided by the return of last years leading receiver, Lance Moore. Moore had shoulder surgery in the offseason and was excited to be back on the field:

Jets’ Rookie QB Sanchez Suffering From Minor Knee Ailment

New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has been a crucial factor in the teams 2-0 start, showing a poise and head for the game very rare for NFL newcomers. Still, there wasn’t much worry at the revelation that hes suffering from tendinitis in his right knee. The Jets announced Sanchez’s injury on Thursday, and hes listed as probable on the official NFL injury report.

Sanchez practiced on Thursday, and though he was seen stopping to stretch and rub his right knee on a few occasions didn’t seem to suffer any impairment in his mobility. He participated in the entire practice, and there didn’t appear to be any sort of effort to prepare Kellen Clemens to assume the starting role.

After practice, Jets head coach Rex Ryan confirmed the injury while downplaying its significance:

“It’s not that big a deal. He has something. I don’t know how to describe it than just to say its a little tendinitis. But, he’s fine. I mean, he fully participated and moved around great, I thought.”

New York offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was even more emphatic in his statement:

“Mark’s totally fine.”

Giants Defeat Redskins In NFC East Battle

The New York Giants jumped out to a 17-0 lead against their NFC East rivals from Washington, and were never threatened as they went on to beat the Redskins by a final score of 23-17. Defensive stalwart Osi Umenyiora returned from a serious knee injury and scored a touchdown on a fumble return, while the Giants offense controlled the ball well and completely dominated the time of possession.

NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Redskins as +5 road underdogs were likely not heartened by the near miss on a backdoor cover. The Redskins scored a touchdown with 1:30 left to get within a ” point of the spread but the Giants still got the cover by the slimmest of margins. The Skins dropped to 13-17 ATS over the past three years with the setback, while New York improved their pointspread mark to an impressive 27-11 against the number. NFL totals players also witnessed a late game change of fortune due to the Skins touchdown, with the 7 points pushing the point total OVER the posted 37.

None of the Giants players were as elated with the victory as defensive end Umenyiora. Hed missed the entire 2008 season due to a knee injury, and was happy to be back contributing to a victory:

San Francisco Stays Perfect In Exhibition Play With Win Over Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys used their running game to take a 10-3 halftime lead, but the San Francisco 49ers reserves made the most of their opportunity in the second half. San Francisco outscored Dallas 17-3 after the break to win the NFL preseason contest by a 20-13 final score. The victory improved the Niners NFL preseason mark to a perfect 3-0.

San Francisco won outright as +6 road underdogs”oddly, it was their first pointspread cover of the NFL preseason despite their undefeated straight up record. Dallas ATS mark at 1-2 is identical to their straight up record. The 33 combined points dipped UNDER the posted total of 38.

Dallas was excited about the play of their one-two combination at running back. Felix Jones and Marion Barber gained most of the yardage during the Cowboys 94 yard touchdown drive in the first half. After the game, Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett gave his thoughts on their effort:

“They’re a great combination. You don’t want to pigeonhole one as being this kind of back and the other guy being this kind of back. We just like to get them out there and let them play and they both have proven they can run both inside and outside and they can catch the ball, and they can block and do all those things. It’s just fun to see them get their opportunities.”

Browns Mangini Won’t Name Starting QB Until Gameday

Most NFL head coaches place a priority on naming a starting QB before the regular season begins. The idea is that it helps the chemistry on the team, as well as helping the quarterback define himself as a team leader. Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini hasn’t named his starting QB yet. Nor will he, at least not publicly. Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson will find out if they’re the starting QB in the next couple of days, but the coach won’t divulge that information to the public until game day.

Mangini stressed that he’d already made his choice. He also made clear that there would be no public announcement forthcoming:

“In terms of announcing it publicly, that’s not something I plan to do. It will be internal. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that. I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But that will be something that will be internal.”

As of Sunday, both quarterbacks were still in the dark and not saying much. Derek Anderson said he didnt have a clue:

“I know as much as you guys know.

Steelers Shut Down Bills In NFL Preseason Play

Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp in his return to the Pittsburgh Steelers lineup from injury, while the Buffalo Bills offense continued to sputter as the Steelers topped the visiting Bills 17-0 in NFL preseason action. Roethlisberger finished with 168 yards on 15 for 19 passing as Pittsburgh put 17 points on the board for the shutout. The victory improved Pittsburgh’s NFL preseason record to 2-1, while Buffalo dropped to 1-3 and hardly looked like a team that has had the benefit of an extra preseason contest.

NFL football betting enthusiasts who backed the Steelers cashed their tickets as Pittsburgh covered the -6 price as home favorites. The Steelers are now 2-1 against the number in the NFL preseason, while Buffalo dropped to 1-2-1 ATS.

Roethlisberger was generally pleased with his overall caliber of play:

“I was really proud of the way the guys were able to move the ball and … change some plays at the line of scrimmage. We made some mistakes early, but then we drove down the field.”

Bills coach Dick Jauron was less pleased with the showing of his troops:

“We’ve got a lot of issues that we’ve got to solve. We’ve got to solve them very quickly.”

Chiefs Great Len Dawson

Since 1963, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the city’s professional football representative. First created in 1960 and named the Dallas Texans, they moved to Kansas City three years later – where they have remained to this day. A charter franchise in the now defunct American Football League, the Chiefs now compete in the American Football Conference’s (AFC) Western Division. There have been many great players over the last five decades who have worn the Chiefs uniform, but one of the greatest Chiefs ever was former quarterback and Hall of Famer Leonard “Len” Dawson.

Len’s college days

Quarterback Lenny Dawson was a star long before he hit the professional ranks. He led his Purdue Boilermakers in three successful seasons first. His presence with the Purdue team was never a foregone conclusion, however, as he was also heavily recruited by the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Eventually, his decision came down to the type of offense that the teams ran and his newfound fondness for Purdue’s coach. History was kind to both the team and Dawson, since he led all of his competition in the Big Ten Conference in each of the three years he started as quarterback, while posting gaudy passing yard numbers throughout.
