A young student, Linus Torvalds, created Linux operating system at the University of Helsinki in Finland. He had a keen interest in Minix, a small Unix system and hence started developing it in’91. It was in’94 that he released version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel. This is the basis on which the Linux operating system has been developed. Hundreds of companies and individuals have used this Kernel to release their own versions of operating systems. The current version is 2.6, developed in December 2003 and the quest for improvisation continues.
