If you do not want to get scammed then you really need to find out everything you can before making a purchase.
One of the first places you should go is to the personal computer shop. Most cities have several to choose from. There you will find several new and used laptops. Every shop will allow you to play with it for a little bit, and ask questions about this item. Do not buy it if you have any doubts at all about it, save you money until you find the one for you.
As you are looking around for your laptop, if you happen across on that you like and think will work for you, make sure you look at it in detail. Ask yourself if it has the things that you want and will it accommodate the extra things like your speakers for example. Ask if there is a warranty with this item.
If you have not thought of it already go shop on some of the classified websites. You can find a tremendous amount of items for sale, including computers of all kinds. All of the larger stores that carry televisions and video players will also have computer related items. You should have at least two or three near where you live that you can peruse at your leisure. Insist on seeing the item powered on and working properly. Then you know that it does work. If it does work it is worth a second look.
You need to realize that when you buy anything used, that you have no idea what is wrong with it, or if it was taken care of. It is very difficult to find a perfect used laptop. Generally there will be no warranties on a used item. When you buy it then it is all your responsibility, and you probably will not get a refund if the item does not work.
One option that you have is finding a family member or a close buddy if they know where to purchase laptops. Always look in the local newspaper or small coupon circulars for ideas on where to buy the item. Most cities have the big box membership shops that may have used units that they sell, you never know until you go.
At this point you know that you really need to do your homework when anything used. Read the classified sites on and offline. Definitely do some comparison shopping of your own. Ask questions until you are satisfied that you are buying a good computer. My last thought is do not get ripped off by someone trying to sell you a lemon.
